What to Expect

Overview

Crime affects victims in many ways - physically, emotionally, financially, and spiritually. If you are the victim of a crime you can expect to receive support, information, and referrals to address the concerns specific to your situation and aid you in the recovery process.

Program staff can assist you in requesting restitution from the defendant, escort you to court proceedings, and convey information about your specific situation and concerns to the prosecuting attorney.

Safety Is a Priority

The Victim Witness Program can also address any worries you may have about your continuing safety and assist you in taking court action to prevent further harm. Referrals can also be made to appropriate agencies for counseling and emergency or financial assistance.

Expectations from the Court System

In addition, the Victim Witness Program can prepare you for what to expect from the court system. Minnesota law provides victims of crime with specific rights. You will be informed of your rights and offered assistance in taking advantage of those rights.

Program staff will keep you informed of progress made at important phases of the court process from the time a person is charged until the final outcome is known.
