Overview
The county zoning ordinance (PDF) prescribes the technical standards that on-site septic systems are required to meet for compliance and outlines the requirements for the upgrade of systems found not to be in compliance.
On-site septic systems are subject to inspection at transfer of property, upon the addition of living space that includes a bedroom and/or a bathroom, and at discovery of the failure of an existing system.
Public Health
The improper design, location, installation, use, and maintenance of individual sewage treatment systems adversely affects the public health, safety, and general welfare by discharge of inadequately treated sewage to surface and groundwater. These systems must meet the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) standards set forth in Chapter 7080.
