Windbreaks

What is a Windbreak?

Windbreaks or shelterbelts (including living snow fences) are single or multiple rows of trees or shrubs in linear configurations.

Windbreaks have many purposes such as:

  • Reduce soil erosion from wind
  • Protect plants from wind related damage
  • Protect structures, animals, and people from damaging winds.
  • Manage snow distribution
  • Improve air quality
  • Enhance wildlife habitat
  • Reduce energy used in the heating and cooling of structures
